Lotus Notes stuck on loading screen

So my Lotus Notes client is stuck… found this blog post from Paul Farris 1. Tried it and after letting it scroll through the loading screen for a few hours, I gave up and found a few more tips from an IBM technote2
What finally worked for me was running the ZapNotes program, so whatever magic it does it helped to clean up the cruft that was keeping my Notes client from starting normally…
